Ambolt participated in the last of Sven Hedin's expeditions (1927-1933), which went to Central Asia (western China, northern Tibet). He contributed during the expedition with geodetic measurements such as location determinations, triangulations and gravity measurements. These works formed the basis for the cartographic works that the expedition accomplished. Ambolt has described his Asian travels in the book Karavan (1935).
