Serious traveller - got free passport from Emperor of Russia to pursue his wish to be an artist and traveller. Made his 6 year journey with his second wife, Lucy Sherrard Atkinson (nee Finley) (1817-1893). (He was already married when he married her.)

Route

1847 travelled via Urals, the Altai Mountains in southern Siberia, into Mongolia in 1851 and then on to Dzungaria. On this trip he entered Mongolia through the Tangou Mountains east of the Oubsa (Uvs) valley and on to Sangiin Dalai Nor then to the Kara Nor in the Eastern Sayan Mountains in Russia. Then in Upper and Lower Amoor - writes about the Keruloun valley.
